EABs enhance road safety at APA gas infrastructure sites

Over the past few years, Roadside Services and Solutions has been at the forefront of road safety, installing crash-rated Energy Absorbing Bollards (EAB60s) across multiple APA Gas Infrastructure sites in South Australia.

These installations span both the Metropolitan Area and the Barossa Valley Region, ensuring enhanced protection for critical utility assets and public safety.

Why Energy Absorbing Bollards?

EAB60s are specially designed for high-risk environments where motor vehicles, often traveling at speed, intersect with areas of high pedestrian activity. These safety devices are typically placed within a 5 metre exclusion zone, measured from the back of the kerb, providing essential protection in spaces such as outdoor dining areas and other pedestrian-heavy zones.

A prime example of this crucial safety initiative is the recent installation of 11 x EAB60s at one of Adelaide’s busiest intersections: the corner of Cavan Road and Grand Junction Road, Cavan.

This location experiences high traffic volumes daily, making it imperative to safeguard both pedestrians and infrastructure.

Protecting critical infrastructure

Many utility infrastructure assets, such as gas lines and electrical systems, are situated below ground, concealed beneath Gatic or pit covers. These hidden assets are vulnerable to accidental impacts, which could lead to significant damage or disruption.

By installing Energy Absorbing Bollards, Roadside Services and Solutions ensures technicians working on these assets remain protected from errant vehicles, reducing the risk of catastrophic incidents.

Additionally, in the unfortunate event of a vehicle collision, the EAB is engineered to absorb the impact, reducing potential harm to drivers while also preventing damage to infrastructure.

This dual-purpose design helps preserve lives and maintain essential services with minimal disruption.

Additional benefits

Beyond enhancing safety, the strategic placement of Energy Absorbing Bollards also provides operational advantages. By mitigating vehicle intrusion risks, these installations allow for a reduced level of Traffic Management Services during routine maintenance activities. This, in turn, leads to cost savings and a more efficient workflow for maintenance teams.

Moreover, Energy Absorbing Bollards (rated for 50kph zones) and Energy Absorbing Tree/Pole Buffers are also deployed in front of SAPN assets, offering additional protection for motorists and safeguarding Stobie Poles from vehicle collisions.
