Non-deforming bollards protect critical gas pipeline in North Adelaide

Roadside Services and Solutions has recently partnered with APA Group, Australia’s largest natural gas infrastructure business, to enhance the safety and security of a critical gas pipeline at Bonython Park, North Adelaide.

The 250mm diameter Mains Gas Line, which spans above the Torrens River before transitioning underground on both its southern and northern sides, is a key infrastructure asset.

With the ongoing development of the area and increased public activity, safeguarding this pipeline has become a priority. The pipeline’s proximity to the bustling Port Road/Park Terrace intersection means it faces potential hazards, including maintenance activities by council mobile plant and equipment, as well as increased foot, bike, and motorised vehicle traffic through the adjacent parklands.

To mitigate risks and ensure long-term protection, Roadside Services and Solutions installed seven non-deforming heavy-duty steel bollards around the terminating pipeline on the northern side of the river precinct. These non-deforming bollards, each measuring 1500mm in height and 165mm in diameter with a 5mm thick steel construction, create a robust protective barrier for the pipeline.

Designed for durability and strength, the bollards were manufactured in-house at Roadside’s Lonsdale depot, within the company’s engineering and metal fabrication workshop.

To further enhance longevity, they have been galvanised, powder-coated in safety yellow for high visibility, and securely in-ground mounted to a depth of 800mm in a reinforced concrete foundation.
