Driving safety across the Nullarbor

At Roadside Services and Solutions (RSS), no project is too remote when it comes to keeping Australian roads safe.

Recently, RSS was engaged by Downer to undertake a guardrail replacement and repair program across 10 locations on the Eyre Peninsula, stretching all the way to the South Australia and Western Australia border.

Working in one of Australia’s most iconic and isolated landscapes, a two-person RSS crew mobilised to the Nullarbor Plain, fully equipped to complete the project within an impressive seven-day timeframe.

The team loaded all required equipment and materials onto an RSS truck, including the specialised Pauselli rock-breaking machine, allowing them to efficiently complete repairs across multiple locations without reliance on additional support resources.

And if you’ve ever stood at the sign marking the eastern end of the treeless Nullarbor Plain, you’ll know it’s the sort of place where a traffic jam means spotting two vehicles in the same hour and your nearest hardware store might be several hundred kilometres away.

The works involved:

• Replacing damaged guardrail sections
• Installing new posts
• Replacing end terminals
• Restoring roadside safety infrastructure damaged by vehicle impacts

Operating in remote environments requires detailed planning, reliable equipment and skilled personnel. By combining all three, RSS was able to safely and efficiently deliver the project while minimising disruption and ensuring the road network remained protected for all users.
