RSS Engineering delivers customised bollard replacement works for Adelaide Airport multi storey car park

Roadside Services and Solutions (RSS) Engineering has successfully completed a specialised bollard replacement project for Adelaide Airport Limited, resolving a priority safety maintenance issue within the airport’s busy multi‑storey car park.
The works involved the supply, manufacture, and installation of new medium‑duty stainless‑steel bollards on Level 2 of the car park, replacing units that had been damaged by vehicles and were no longer in place.
To maximise material efficiency, RSS Engineering also manufactured four additional spare bollards using the stainless‑steel tubing ordered for the project.
A technical challenge requiring a custom solution
During the initial site inspection, the team identified the missing bollards were previously retrofitted with circular bases, unlike the original square‑based bollards installed during the car park’s construction. Complicating matters further, no sample bollard nor construction drawings existed, and the bollards were located on a suspended concrete slab, meaning drilling into the slab was not permitted due to structural integrity risks.
To meet the brief safely and effectively, RSS Engineering proposed a tailored solution:
- Clean and level the existing recessed mounting holes (375mm diameter, 5–8mm deep)
- Square out the recesses
- Install new bollards using chem‑set fixing
- Reinstate the area with high‑strength grout around a 40mm perimeter
This method restored the installation to standard while fully complying with the requirement to avoid drilling into the suspended slab.
The final bollard specification delivered:
- 219mm OD x 1m high Marine Grade Stainless Steel
- Satin finish
- Welded to 300mm x 300mm x 5mm stainless‑steel base plates
- Installed flush with the finished concrete floor
Efficient delivery and quality craftsmanship
The purchase order was received 16 September 2025 and the manufacture and installation were completed 17 October 2025.
All fabrication (six bollards) and installation (two bollards) were completed by Warrick Stirling, Project Manager – Engineering & Construction, with additional value‑added support from the RSS Civil Engineering team, who provided concept designs and CAD drawings.
The project required careful planning to manage:
- Custom fabrication without drawings
- Modifications to suspended flooring for retro‑fit installation
- Site traffic management to ensure worker safety
- Dust control in a live operational environment
Despite these challenges, the team delivered a high‑quality outcome with a fast turnaround, demonstrating RSS Engineering’s capability in bespoke metal fabrication, structural problem‑solving, and precision installation.
Client testimonial
Wade Phillips, Maintenance Team Leader – Landside at Adelaide Airport, shared his feedback:
“The manufacture and installation was timely and it is a good standard. The car parks team are also happy with the installs. Thanks again!”
A strong outcome for Adelaide Airport
With the works now complete, Adelaide Airport benefits from:
- A safe and compliant solution to a priority maintenance issue
- Restored protection for EV charging bays and adjacent parking areas
- A reliable partner for future custom metal fabrication and installation needs
